Bio
Garrett Langebartels is a multi-disciplinary painter, furniture maker and musician based in Indianapolis, IN. His work explores the boundaries of abstraction through acrylic on canvas and plywood. Rooted in the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, his paintings engage with color, geometry, and rhythm, drawing inspiration from the likes of Wassily Kandinsky, Josef Albers, and Agnes Martin. Similarly, his furniture works explore the natural rhythms of the raw materials. Nature expresses itself and his furniture pieces aim to honor that expression and flow. Each piece is made to be used, enjoyed, repaired and ultimately returned to the earth from which it came. He draws influence in furniture from the sensitivities of George Nakashima and James Krenov in that they blur the lines between furniture and sculpture.
Langebartels’ compositions often hover between structure and spontaneity, channeling emotion through carefully balanced forms and layered textures. Working intuitively, he seeks to create visual experiences that invite contemplation and emotional resonance, free from literal representation.
Langebartels embraces imperfection and process, emphasizing the act of creating as both meditative and expressive. His practice reflects a deep personal inquiry into perception, harmony, and the unspoken language of abstraction.
